President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has underscored the urgent need for governments across Nigeria and the African continent to effectively harness the immense potential of young people, warning that leaders who fail to create opportunities for the youth could be voted out of office.
Speaking on Thursday during a panel session at the 13th Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, President Tinubu described Nigerian youths as energetic, ambitious, and unwilling to tolerate excuses from those in positions of authority.
According to the President, the responsibility of any government is to equip young people with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.
“We have a very dynamic youthful population, restless and not ready to accept any excuses. I am a politician; if I don’t prepare them for opportunities, they will vote me out,” Tinubu stated.
He emphasized that political leaders must remain accountable to the people by fostering an enabling environment that supports innovation, entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
Tinubu Calls for Peaceful APC Primaries
In a related development, President Tinubu has urged aspirants and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct themselves peacefully as the party begins its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement personally signed on Thursday, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a significant milestone in the party’s democratic journey, noting that it marks the APC’s fourth election cycle since its formation in 2013.
Tinubu reiterated that the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus-building, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to party unity.
“We founded the All Progressives Congress on the firm principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and personal devotion and sacrifice. This spirit of selflessness has seen us through every election cycle and made us stronger as a party.”
Consensus Preferred, Sportsmanship Essential
The President acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements where possible, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the APC Constitution.
He described consensus candidacy as a constructive option that can minimize internal disputes and strengthen cohesion within the party.
“I note the impressive progress made in this regard and encourage party members to take full advantage of this opportunity to ensure a seamless process and a more united party.”
However, Tinubu stressed that where consensus cannot be reached, aspirants must approach the primaries with maturity, sportsmanship, and respect for democratic principles.
He warned against any actions or rhetoric capable of undermining the unity and stability of the ruling party as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
