As Oyo State gradually moves towards the 2027 governorship election, there is a need for deep reflection on our political journey—where we are coming from, where we are today and, most importantly, where we want to go.

Since the return of democratic rule in 1999, Oyo State has remained a centre of vibrant political consciousness. From the turbulent formative years of the Fourth Republic to the defining battles between conservative tendencies and progressive ideals, the people of the state have consistently demonstrated that political power ultimately belongs to the masses.

As I have stated in one of my previous articles, history has taught us that meaningful development thrives when leadership is anchored on a progressive framework—one that prioritises strong institutions, grassroots welfare and economic development over personal or elitist interests.

As the clock ticks towards the 2027 gubernatorial election and the ultimate race to Agodi State Secretariat, the electorate is once again confronted with a defining choice: Do we embrace tested and thoroughbred administrative competence, or settle for political calculations ahead of the collective interest of the people?

The reality is that two major political tendencies appear likely to shape the 2027 contest—the progressive bloc represented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling political structure seeking to retain influence through its evolving platforms.

Rather than dwelling endlessly on party labels, it is important to examine the individuals seeking to lead Oyo State and the records they bring to the table.

To understand what executive capacity truly looks like, one must reflect on the administration of former Governor Rashidi Ladoja. Behind every stable and result-oriented government is often a capable coordinator, and within the Ladoja administration, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, popularly known as BSA, played a significant role.

Having served as Secretary to the State Government and later as Chief of Staff, Alli brought administrative experience, institutional discipline and strategic coordination to state governance. Long before entering the chambers of the National Assembly, BSA had built considerable experience in managing complex government responsibilities, balancing political interests and contributing to governance at different levels.

His political and administrative journey—from serving as elected Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government to his leadership role at Odu’a Investment Company Limited—reflects a career built over time through public service and corporate experience.

On the other side of the political divide, Abimbola Adekanmbi also brings government experience to the conversation. During the administration of the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, he served in prominent capacities, including Deputy Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance and Budget Planning.

However, public service comes with the responsibility of public assessment. Those who have previously occupied important positions in government must be prepared for citizens to evaluate their records, policies and contributions. The Ajimobi administration, like every government, recorded achievements as well as criticisms, particularly regarding economic policies, workers’ welfare and the relationship between government and sections of the grassroots.

This is why the 2027 election must go beyond political slogans and personal branding. Oyo people must carefully assess every aspirant based on competence, capacity, character, accessibility and demonstrated commitment to public service.

Governor Seyi Makinde is approaching the conclusion of his constitutionally permitted tenure, having built a political structure with loyalists, supporters and grassroots actors across the 33 local government areas of the state.

The transition ahead presents an important test for the political establishment and the people of Oyo State. Those who have contributed to building political structures understandably expect fairness, consultation and recognition in the process of determining the future direction of the state.

However, beyond the expectations of political stakeholders, the ultimate consideration must remain the interest of the people. Oyo State cannot afford leadership selected merely for convenience, personal loyalty or the protection of individual interests. The next governor must emerge with the capacity to provide accountable, transparent and inclusive governance.

Any aspirant seeking to govern Oyo State must also demonstrate a genuine connection with the people. Leadership cannot be built only around election seasons. It requires sustained engagement with communities, grassroots organisations, market men and women, farmers, artisans, professionals and young people.

A candidate must understand the realities of every part of the state—from the commercial centres of Ibadan to the agricultural communities of Oke-Ogun, the industrial aspirations of Ogbomoso and the diverse economic needs of Oyo, Ibarapa and other zones.

In this context, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli presents himself as one of the leading figures within the progressive political family. His supporters point to his experience as a legislator, lawyer, administrator, former local government chairman, former Secretary to the State Government and corporate leader.

In the 10th National Assembly, Alli has continued to represent his constituency while maintaining a political relationship with stakeholders across Oyo State. His long years within public service have given him experience across local, state and federal levels of governance.

His political journey is not without the scrutiny that naturally comes with public office, but his record offers voters a basis upon which to assess his readiness for higher responsibility.

The road to Agodi State Secretariat in 2027 should not be treated as a political experiment. The next administration will confront serious questions of economic growth, infrastructure, security, education, employment, healthcare and the management of public resources.

Oyo State therefore needs a leader with a clear understanding of government, the ability to build institutions and the political maturity to unite different interests for the common good.

The choice before the people must ultimately be based on competence and capacity. Political parties may present different candidates, but the electorate must look beyond propaganda and carefully interrogate the records of everyone seeking the highest office in the state.

For those of us who believe in Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, his long record of public service and administrative experience make him a strong contender for the task ahead.

The journey to 2027 must be about Oyo State first.

It must be about choosing experience over experimentation, competence over empty promises and leadership that can unite the people around a shared vision of progress.

The road to Agodi State Secretariat is open. Let the contest be guided by ideas, records, capacity and the collective will of the people.

Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, BSA, remains one of the tested hands Oyo State can confidently consider for the journey ahead.
