In a remarkable endeavor, Olaniyi Israel Adewale, a Saki-born undergraduate student of Computer Science at the Federal University of Oye Ekiti, is set to etch his name in history by attempting the Guinness World Records for the ‘Longest Drumming Marathon by an Individual’ using the unique African Talking Drum (Gangan).
Following a surge in record-breaking attempts by Nigerians, Adewale’s pursuit comes on the heels of the unprecedented success of the Hilda Baci’s cook-a-thon record.
The confirmation email sent to Adewale by Guinness World Records, bearing application reference number 23061316563, outlined the details of his acceptance and the current record to surpass: “Longest marathon drumming by an individual. The current record is 134:05:00 hour(s):minute(s):second(s).”
The contract, dated 06/13/2023, formalizes the agreement between Guinness World Records Limited (GWR) and Olaniyi Israel Adewale, setting the stage for the ambitious attempt.
Adewale expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am honored and excited to represent Oyo State and Nigeria in this record-breaking endeavor. The African Talking Drum holds a special place in our cultural heritage, and I am eager to showcase its rhythmic richness on a global platform.”
The marathon drumming event is scheduled to take place on 30th March 2024 with Adewale aiming not only to break the existing record but also to promote the cultural significance of the African Talking Drum.
