The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is set to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, March 30, 2026.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, who said all arrangements for the defection had been concluded.
According to the statement, Kwankwaso will formally register as a member of the ADC at 12 noon at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano. Multiple Nigerian outlets also reported the planned move on Saturday. 
The movement also directed its members across the country to immediately begin registration with the ADC in their various wards, local government areas and states.
Dr. Mohammed said members were encouraged to participate actively in party activities and contribute to the growth and success of the ADC at all levels.
He described the move as a strategic decision taken in the best interest of the movement, Kano State and Nigeria, adding that it reflects the group’s commitment to democratic values, good governance and inclusive national development.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 general election, has remained one of the key opposition figures in northern Nigeria. 
His planned defection comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election, with several politicians across the country already switching party platforms in recent weeks. Reports also indicate that Kwankwaso recently held talks with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, further fueling speculation about wider opposition coalition moves. 
Political observers believe the development could significantly reshape the opposition landscape, especially in Kano and parts of northern Nigeria where the Kwankwasiyya Movement maintains a strong grassroots following.
