The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major overhaul of the nation’s education system by scrapping the existing Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure. In its place, the government has introduced a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model, ensuring that every Nigerian child receives continuous education up to the age of 16 before advancing to tertiary institutions.

This reform effectively replaces the current 6-3-3-4 education system with a 12-4 model. Additionally, the government has proposed 16 years as the minimum entry age for tertiary institutions, subject to approval by the National Council on Education (NCE).

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this announcement on Thursday in Abuja during the 2025 Extraordinary National Council on Education meeting. The meeting, attended by commissioners for education from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with key stakeholders, marked a significant step towards reshaping Nigeria’s education landscape.

According to Dr. Alausa, merging secondary education into the basic education framework aligns with global best practices and will provide students with a seamless learning experience up to the age of 16. He emphasized that the reform aims to reduce dropout rates by eliminating financial and systemic barriers that hinder students from completing their education.

“Extending basic education to 12 years will ensure a standardized curriculum nationwide, promote early exposure to vocational and entrepreneurial skills, and prepare students for both higher education and employment,” the Minister stated.

Dr. Alausa further noted that many developed nations operate similar systems where basic education spans 12 years before specialization at the tertiary level. He added that this transformation aligns Nigeria’s education sector with international standards, enhancing educational outcomes and global competitiveness.

Beyond academics, the Minister highlighted the broader economic and social benefits of the reform. “Educated youth contribute significantly to national development. This initiative will equip students with relevant skills, reduce child labor, and mitigate social vices associated with school dropouts,” he said.

To ensure a smooth implementation of the new model, Dr. Alausa outlined key strategies, including:

Policy reforms to integrate secondary education into basic education.

The Federal Government remains committed to providing quality and accessible education for all Nigerian children and will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of this reform.
