In a significant development, twenty-nine suspects have been arraigned before an Ibadan Chief Magistrate Court for their alleged involvement in the invasion of the Oyo State Secretariat over the weekend, amidst calls for the creation of a Yoruba nation.
The suspects, comprising individuals of varying demographics including males, females, young, and old, faced a seven-count charge related to offenses such as treasonable felony, going armed in conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and order, and illegal possession of firearms, among others.
According to Investigative Police Officer Bakare Rasaq, an Inspector with the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan, the suspects’ actions contravene Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
Presiding over the case, Chief Magistrate OO Ogunkanmi scheduled the hearing for August 1, 2024, and ordered that the suspects be remanded at the state correctional center in Agodi.
This development underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold public order and the rule of law, particularly in the face of challenges arising from socio-political agitation.
