The Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is expected to make his long-anticipated return to Ibadan this week, as the traditional 21-day mourning period for the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Ige I, comes to a close.
According to palace sources who spoke with The Punch on Sunday, Oba Ladoja—who has been away from public engagements to observe the customary mourning for his late predecessor—is scheduled to make his first official appearance in the ancient city “any moment from now.”
Preparations are reportedly in full swing as family, friends, and well-wishers gear up to receive the incoming monarch at his Ondo Street residence in Ibadan with cultural fanfare and celebration.
The late Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 7, 2025, shortly after his 90th birthday and just before the first anniversary of his coronation. In line with his lifelong devotion to the Christian faith, he will be buried in accordance with Christian rites.
A palace insider confirmed, “His Majesty was a committed member of the Cathedral of St. Peter, Aremo, and will be laid to rest following Christian traditions.”
The burial ceremony is tentatively slated for Thursday, August 8, with significant state involvement expected. Ongoing discussions between the Oyo State Government and the royal family aim to ensure a befitting farewell that reflects the monarch’s status and legacy.
“This is a state burial, and full details will be jointly announced by the government and the family. Until then, no one can speak officially on the arrangements,” a source close to the palace stated.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Mr. Gbenga Ayoade, affirmed that preparations are progressing smoothly.
“The family of the late revered monarch will soon issue an official statement. Everything is under control,” he said.
