The Oyo State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, mostly children, in a stampede that occurred during a private children’s funfair held at Basorun Islamic High School, Ibadan, in the early hours of today.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government confirmed that several children lost their lives, while others sustained injuries during the unfortunate incident. A rapid response team was immediately mobilized upon receiving the distressing news to provide urgent assistance.
The Commissioner commended the swift intervention by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, and the activation of all available emergency response teams. Injured victims were promptly transported to various medical facilities across the Ibadan metropolis for urgent medical care.
Prince Oyelade clarified that the Oyo State Government was not involved in the planning of the event and that the Ministry of Health was not approached to provide any logistical support. The statement emphasized the need for proper coordination and adherence to safety protocols when organizing events of such magnitude, particularly those involving vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
To ensure clarity and transparency, the government is awaiting a comprehensive report from the Commissioner of Police to determine the total number of casualties and understand the circumstances leading to the stampede.
