The Executive Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, FNSE, has approved the appointment of Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi as the new Chairman of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).
Dr. Adeniyi, an accomplished academic and seasoned administrator, hails from Oyo Town in Oyo West Local Government Area. With an impressive career spanning decades in education, research, and labour union leadership, he brings to the Commission a wealth of experience and a proven record of excellence and integrity.
He currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, having previously attained the rank of Chief Lecturer at the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora. Throughout his career, Dr. Adeniyi has made notable contributions to academic development, institutional growth, and the welfare of workers within the state’s education sector.
A distinguished scholar, Dr. Adeniyi obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Kwara State University, Malete, in 2023. He holds two Master’s degrees — M.Sc. in Economics from Crescent University, Abeokuta, and M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan — as well as a B.Agric. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan.
Beyond academia, Dr. Adeniyi is a committed trade unionist who has served in various leadership capacities, including Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora, and Zonal Treasurer of ASUP, South-West Zone. He also made history as the Pioneer Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all trade unions in Oyo State’s tertiary institutions, where he championed unity and workers’ rights.
A member of respected professional bodies such as the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) and the African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE), Dr. Adeniyi is widely admired for his dedication to ethical leadership, transparency, and public service.
He is happily married and blessed with children.
Dr. Adeniyi’s appointment as OYSIEC Chairman is a testament to his decades-long commitment to excellence, integrity, and the advancement of good governance in Oyo State.
