The Ona Ara Local Government Environmental Department, in collaboration with its Inukan Local Council Development Area (LCDA) counterpart, has taken a decisive step to protect public health and prevent environmental degradation through a joint sanitation exercise at Kehinsi Orisumbare Community — a boundary settlement between both councils.
In a statement made available to Freshvoice Newsmedia, the exercise was coordinated by the Directors of Environmental Services, Sanitarian Rashidat Popoola and Sanitarian Layinka Olubunmi, and commenced at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The joint operation followed reports of a fabricated metal-and-concrete barrier illegally erected across a major waterway, which had caused severe flooding, erosion, and partial damage to the perimeter fence of the Kehinsi Orisumbare Health Centre.
Security and orderliness during the operation were effectively provided by the Amotekun Corps, Gbaremu Zone, ensuring a smooth and disturbance-free exercise.
Under the leadership of the Executive Chairman of Ona Ara Local Government, Dr. Temitope Kolapo GLORIOUS, the Environmental Health Department of Ona Ara joined forces with that of Inukan LCDA under the supervision of the Vice Chairman and Political Head, Hon. Windapo Oluwole, to swiftly address the environmental menace.
HLGA Ona Ara Local Government, Alhaja Ojewumi Mujidat and other management staffs alongside the ag HLGA Inukan LCDA Mr Kazeem made a huge input to the successful outing.
The joint task team executed the following key actions:
Removal of the fabricated barrier obstructing the natural drainage channel.
Evacuation and proper disposal of debris at an approved dumpsite.
Re-channeling of stormwater to restore free flow and prevent further flooding.
Community sensitization on the importance of environmental hygiene and adherence to sanitation laws.
The exercise achieved immediate success as the blocked waterway was cleared and normal flow restored. The flooding subsided, erosion threats were curtailed, and the health centre’s fence regained its structural stability.
Speaking after the operation, Dr. Temitope Kolapo GLORIOUS commended the synergy between the two councils and lauded the dedication of the Environmental Health Officers for their swift response. He also appreciated the cooperation of community residents and the support of the Amotekun Corps.
