President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri will now bear the name of Nigeria’s late former leader, Muhammadu Buhari. The institution is henceforth to be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
The announcement was made during a special expanded Federal Executive Council session held Thursday evening at the Aso Villa in honor of the late statesman.
In a deeply moving tribute, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a good, decent, and honourable man”—not perfect, but unwavering in discipline, moral strength, and patriotism.
While acknowledging that every legacy invites debate, Tinubu insisted that Buhari’s incorruptible character, his austere approach to power, and his quiet courage will remain a moral benchmark in Nigeria’s history.
“He stood ramrod,” the President declared, “unmoved by the temptation of power, unseduced by applause, and unafraid of the loneliness that sometimes comes to those who do what is right rather than popular.”
Reflecting on their shared political journey, Tinubu recalled how their alliance in 2015 led to the first peaceful transfer of power between rival parties in Nigeria’s democratic history—crediting Buhari’s leadership with restraint and grace throughout his presidency.
The chamber, filled with cabinet ministers, top officials, and aides, fell into reflective silence as the tribute drew to a close. A moment of prayer and solemn silence was observed.
President Tinubu’s decision to rename the university is seen as both a symbolic and strategic gesture—honoring Buhari’s contributions to national recovery, especially in the insurgency-affected North-East, where his administration focused major reconstruction efforts.
“The incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten,” Tinubu concluded.
