Former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday, received two former Vice Presidents—Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Architect Namadi Sambo—at his country home in Ilesa, Osun State.
The high-profile courtesy visit took place just hours before the coronation ceremony of the 49th Owa Obokun and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, slated for today in Ilesa.
Freshvoice Newsmedia earlier reported that the Osun State High Court in Ilesa, on Thursday, declined to halt the coronation ceremony, paving the way for the historic event.
Confirming the visit, Atiku shared a post via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, accompanied by a video capturing moments of warm interaction over breakfast at Aregbesola’s residence.
“Breakfast time at the residence of former Governor of Osun State, Engr. Rauf Aregbesola,” the former Vice President wrote.
Though the specific intent of the visit remains unclear, it has sparked widespread interpretations of possible political undertones, especially given the stature of those present.
In the video, Aregbesola was seen welcoming his guests in the company of notable Osun political figures, including former APC Chairman in the state, Elder Lowo Adebiyi; Chairman of the Omoluabi Progressives, Alhaji Azeez Adesiji; former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti; and former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Najeem Salaam.
Earlier on Friday, Atiku also posted from Akure Airport in Ondo State, where he acknowledged the warm reception from stakeholders ahead of the royal event.
“I was warmly received by stakeholders on arrival at the Akure Airport in Ondo State, ahead of the coronation of the 49th HRH Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup today,” Atiku stated.
While the visit may appear informal on the surface, many political observers are interpreting the gathering of Atiku, Sambo, and Aregbesola as a strategic meeting with potential implications for Nigeria’s 2027 political landscape.
