In a decisive move to ease the burden of soaring food prices, the Ona Ara Local Government of Oyo State has announced the hosting of a Low-Cost Market as part of activities lined up for the 2025 World Food Day Celebration, slated for October 16.
The market fair will hold on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at the Main Local Government Secretariat, Akanran, beginning at 7:00 am.
According to a statement signed by the Chairman’s Press Secretary, Mr. Rahmon Alawode, the initiative is being spearheaded by the Executive Chairman, Dr. Temitope Kolapo GLORIOUS, in partnership with the Ona Ara Local Government Farmers Association.
The program is designed to provide immediate relief for residents grappling with present economic realities by making staple food items available at subsidized prices.
It will be recalled that, earlier this year, Ona Ara Local Government in collaboration with the Oyo State Government’s Agricultural Empowerment Initiative, supported farmers across the council area to enhance productivity and ensure a sustainable food supply.
Speaking ahead of the initiative, Dr. Glorious emphasized: “I’m just concerned about the fact that the economy is hard, and we need to complement the efforts of the state government. Part of our campaign promise to our people is to do everything within our capacity to reduce hardship in the community, and that is what we are doing. For me, the joy from my people is what gives me joy, too. That’s all I’m expecting—the happiness of my people.”
The Ona Ara Low-Cost Market is expected to attract a large turnout, reinforcing the council’s commitment to its NEW ERA Agenda on Welfare and Social Services, while also promoting food security and agricultural development across the local government.
