The Yoruba Council Worldwide (YCW), the apex Yoruba interest group, has announced its intent to initiate legal proceedings against former President Olusegun Obasanjo in response to his public disrespect towards Yoruba Obas during a recent event in Iseyin, Oyo State.
It is with deep concern that the YCW addresses this matter, as the Yoruba culture places great emphasis on the reverence and respect for our traditional monarchs. The actions of former President Obasanjo during the said event were deemed disgraceful and sacrilegious.
Recall that Mr. Obasanjo was previously given a three-day ultimatum to issue a public apology to the entire Yoruba Land for his actions. Regrettably, he has not taken the opportunity to rectify his conduct, prompting the YCW to seek legal recourse.
The YCW firmly believes that no one, regardless of their status or position, should be above the cultural values and traditions that define the Yoruba people. Disrespect towards our revered monarchs is an affront to our heritage and cannot be tolerated.
Furthermore, the YCW calls upon the Olowu of Owu to cease recognizing Mr. Obasanjo as the Balogun of Owu Kingdom until this matter is resolved through due legal process.
This decision to pursue legal action is not taken lightly, but it is in defense of our culture and traditions, which have been passed down through generations. The YCW remains committed to upholding and preserving the dignity of the Yoruba people and our revered monarchs.
