The Opeola-Oniroko Royal Family and the entire community of Iroko in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State deeply regret to announce the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), the revered Oniroko of Iroko, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.
The announcement was made public by the Office of the Oniroko of Iroko and personally signed by Prince Dolapo Abioye, on behalf of the royal family.
Oba Opeola, a widely respected monarch, was a symbol of unity, tradition, and progress. Throughout his reign, he devoted his life to serving his people, preserving cherished cultural heritage, and championing development within Iroko, the Akinyele Local Government Area, and the wider Oyo State.
The royal family has scheduled the monarch’s final burial rites to take place at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 31, 2025, in Iroko, in accordance with Islamic rites.
In the official statement, Prince Abioye remarked: “It is with a deep sense of sorrow and profound respect that I write to formally announce the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba Sunmaila Olasunkanmi Abioye Opeola (Kurunloju I), the Oniroko of Iroko, who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025.
During his reign, His Royal Highness was a symbol of unity, tradition, and progress. He devoted his life to the service of his people, the preservation of our customs, and the pursuit of development in Iroko, Akinyele Local Government, and Oyo State in general.
Arrangements are currently being made by the family to lay his body to eternal rest by 10:00 am tomorrow, Saturday, May 31, 2025, Insha Allah.
All other programmes to ensure a befitting commemoration of his life and service will be announced by the family, in consultation with relevant authorities, at the appropriate time.
We respectfully request the support of all sons and daughters of Iroko, residents, and well-wishers during this period of mourning and in the forthcoming ceremonies.
