Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Adebayo Salami, popularly known as Oga Bello, has revealed that he has no plans to bequeath property to his children, citing his decision as a deliberate choice shaped by his role as a polygamist.

In an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune, the highly respected thespian, who is married to two wives, emphasized that his greatest investment has always been the education of his children.

Oga Bello, whose illustrious acting journey began in 1964 with the Young Concert Party led by the late Ojo Ladipo (Baba Mero), explained that his deep-rooted belief in education stems from a personal void—his parents were unable to support his academic pursuits, a gap he was determined to close for his children.

“I never thought about making any of my children follow in my footsteps. I am very passionate about education. Though I didn’t get the necessary support from my parents due to their limitations, I made up my mind that all my children must be educated — at least to the level of earning a first degree,” he stated.

The actor, who is father to 18 children, several of whom are flourishing in the entertainment industry, revealed that his status as a polygamist influenced his decision not to focus on property accumulation.

“When I became a polygamist, I resolved not to leave properties for my children. All I need is just two houses — one in Lagos and one in my hometown. If there’s any money left in my account, they can share it. My priority has always been their education.”

Speaking further, Salami noted that he never forced his children into the movie industry. Rather, he nurtured their interests while maintaining a strong emphasis on academic performance.

“I never imposed acting on any of them. When I discovered Femi and a few others were drawn to the film industry, I supported them. But I insisted on good academic performance. Whenever they wanted to follow me to rehearsals, I’d say, ‘Not unless you have good results.’ That motivated them to work hard in school.”

Reflecting on his son Femi Adebayo’s success, the proud father said jokingly:

“If I had known Femi would become a filmmaker, I wouldn’t have spent so much money on school — I’d have simply told him to study Theatre Arts or Filmmaking!”

On the topic of ageing and the health challenges faced by many veteran actors, Oga Bello highlighted the importance of early preparation for retirement — a mindset he believes is missing across various professions in Nigeria.

“Old age comes with challenges, no doubt. Preparing for it is a personal responsibility. Sadly, in this part of the world, people often fail to plan ahead. Even I haven’t mapped out my retirement completely. But I’m fortunate — I invested in my children rather than amassing property. And now in my old age, I know they will care for me.”
