The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has officially expelled former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from its fold and imposed a 30-year ban on him from all party-related activities.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) announced the decision in a statement released on Sunday, citing violations of the party’s constitution, ideology, manifesto, principles, and core practices. The NWC emphasized that the move was also in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, which empower political parties to regulate their membership.
According to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, members have been cautioned against engaging with El-Rufai or any individuals acting contrary to the interests of the SDP.
The statement reads in part: “El-Rufai is hereby banished and banned from applying for membership, identifying with the name, insignia, logo, symbol, mark, or any activities, organs, agencies, and institutions of the SDP or donating to, supporting, contributing to, or participating in any affairs of the SDP for a period of 30 years effective from today.”
El-Rufai had reportedly joined the SDP after his departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC). He is also believed to be a significant figure in the recently formed opposition coalition, which adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
