The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against yielding to pressures to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels TV programme, on Thursday night, the former Rivers State Governor said Jonathan must resist attempts by political actors to use him as a tool to destabilize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“With all due respect, I don’t want to be misquoted. Those calling Jonathan now—where were they in 2015 when he needed support? They only want to use him to create a crisis,” Wike said. “I have told everyone who cares to listen: Tinubu must be allowed to complete two terms.”
Responding to questions on whether his stance conflicts with Jonathan’s rumored ambition, Wike clarified that the former President has never informed him of such plans.
“There is no conflict. I have never sat down with Jonathan to say I will support him for 2027,” he stressed.
The FCT Minister also downplayed the recent alarm raised by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over rising hunger and hardship in the country, insisting the current administration is making progress.
“What do you mean by hunger? Hunger has always been there. Things are improving. To say this government isn’t working is unfair. Did hardship just begin under this administration? More money is being shared to states from the Federation Account—not into Tinubu’s pocket,” Wike added.
